Product Background
With multimedia applications to mobile phone, applications for distribution of music and video, reception of radio and analog/digital television broadcasting, etc. has appeared as well as ringtone, and "Sound" handled on mobile phone has a tendency to grow increasingly diverse. Against a backdrop of such trend, we developed "MA-7(Yamaha AudioEngineTM)" series as an audio processor with high quality and high performance for full control of sound processing and playback.
YMU786 (MA-7) is an audio LSI, a basic type of AudioEngine series. Analog block including Mixer, Headphone Amplifier, and Speaker Amplifier is also integrated onto a single chip as well as an Audio Processor.

Main Features

New-generation Synthesizer and Multiple Function Effector Evolved Game or Ringtone
  • Evolved Hybrid Synthesizer
    Hybrid Synthesizer, combining an established and proven FM synthesizer (Note 1) as an optimum method for mobile phone with several synthesizers such as WaveTable synthesizer (Note 2), StreamPCM synthesizer, and AL synthesizer (Note 3), is mounted. Expressive sound can be sounded for game sound effect or BGM as well as ringtone. The maximum simultaneous generation number is 128-tone. In addition, it supports standard formats such as SMF as well as "SMAF" (Note 4) we have put forward.

  • Multiple Sequence Simultaneous Playback Function
    Up to four Digital Audio sequences and up to four MIDI sequences, totaling 8 sequences can be played back at the same time. Expression for game sound has dramatically been improved as compared with conventional products. Switching playback modes also enables concurrent playback of SMAF and audio. Music game can be easily realized on a mobile phone by supporting a mode, optimum mode for music games, to sound a MIDI command in real time.

  • Multifunctional Effector
    Various effect processing are provided by two independent effect modules. Effects middle class electronic instruments have are attached as standard in addition to Reverb, Delay, Echo, Chorus, and Phaser.
    For example, using "Reverb" can change the whole sound effect (atmosphere) at the moment you go into a tunnel during a car racing game. In addition, using Pitch Change can realize the voice change function and express the Doppler Effect. The multifunctional effector can customize various parameters at will and create an original effector. With the effector, sound quality of SMAF that is applied to Ringtone or Game sound effect has dramatically been improved.

  • 3D Positioning Processor
    Virtual sound sources can be positioned at arbitrary coordinate points on a hemisphere arranged around one's head. For example, game sound with full reality sensation, such as running four cars or moving a plane or helicopter back and forth and around while playing BGM through virtual speakers arranged on the left and right position, can be synthesized. Embedding coordinate points and movement time information into "SMAF" as a 3D command can add 3D positioning effect to ringtone contents as well.
Music Player Function with High Quality and High Performance
  • Enhanced Wide Stereo Function
    Creating virtual speakers (sound source) unconstrained by physical speaker arrangement in playing back music can obtain spatial sense. This allows playbacks with depth feel, and allows you to experience natural surround sound. Even in long listening with headphones, we provide an environment that does not give so much fatigue by positioning the sound being normally placed in one's head on outside of the head. In addition, changing modes enables you to select parameters of your choice out of 13 kinds or more of default settings attached as standard. And, original wide stereo mode can be made by the arrangement of distance setting between left and right speakers, DRY/WET sound ratio, etc.

  • Digital Equalizer Function
    Frequency characteristics to genre of music being played can be realized. Preset parameters such as classic, dance, jazz, pop, rock, and dynamic can be used, and a graphical tool that can develop original equalizers by processing frequency characteristics at will is also provided.

  • Dynamic Range Control Function
    Setting parameters of Threshold, Compressed ratio, Attack time, Release time, and Correction level can configure an original compressor. With small speakers, especially one of mobile phone, a conventional problem that you cannot hear soft sound very well when playing back music downloaded from music distribution service was present. On the contrary, when designing it so that soft sound can be loudly heard, sound gets distorted. If Dynamic Range Control Function is used, every sound source can be played back in optimum dynamic range.

  • Sound Field Control Function
    This function simulates spatial reverbs, and enables playback of music while adding reverbs as in concert hall.

  • Vocal Cancel Function
    This function is used for commercial Karaoke machine etc. and can erase only sound of vocalist from normal music with vocal by utilizing characteristics of human voice. With the use of this function, music with vocal can be used for Karaoke just by downloading it.

    Total management of sound sources that grows diverse, such as Music distribution, Ringtone, Game, Movie, Radio, Television, and Bluetooth input/output.

    MA-7 has high function programming API implemented. And, we provide overall support services for game sound creation, cooperating with programming environment venders in performing connectivity verification or SDK environment creation for the purpose of using API in an environment such as Java or BREW. Comprehensive offerings including the Authoring tool for music creation in addition to the chip, driver software, and various tools realize a high quality mobile audio environment.

  1. FM(Frequency Modulation) Synthesizer
    A synthesizer method utilizing Frequency modulation, proven widely among Electronic musical instrument or computer music. It enables free sound creation from synthesized sounds by musical instruments to electrical sounds.
  2. WaveTable Synthesizer
    This is a synthesizer to generate sounds by reading and resynthesizing voice data stored in a memory. Originally, this system can create real sounds since voices are made using the recorded actual sound; on the contrary, a large number of waveform data are required to improve sound quality.
  3. AL(Analog Lite) Synthesizer
    This is a synthesizer to obtain expressive sounds by processing voices using low-pass filter principle. The AL Synthesizer, which has been added since MA-5, is embedded into all FM Synthesizers and WaveTable Synthesizers, and turned into an Enhanced FM/WaveTable Synthesizer.
  4. SMAF (Synthetic music Mobile Application Format)
    "SMAF" is a file format we develop and release because it is the multimedia contents combining sounds and images on a mobile phone used as a platform. In addition to music data, texts, images (still images, moving images), and digital voice data (PCM/ADPCM etc.) can be handled at the same time. This format can be applied to various services or contents in which music, texts, and images are integrated: Karaoke, Greeting Messages, Games, etc. as well as Ringtone with melody/voice.
