Features of SMAF
Since a chunk structure is used, the component score tracks (synthesizer music tracks), audio tracks and graphics tracks (including text display) can be described independently. Since the tracks are combined and represented using a single format, they can be synchronized between different applications. In addition, since other information (such as the name of the copyright holder and the copy, transfer and edit permissions) can also be stored as part of the file, SMAF is suitable for use as content in applications such as ring tone melodies, karaoke and commercial advertising services.
Since playback is in real-time, playback of individual tracks can be precisely synchronized between different devices. Within the timeline for a track, the sequence list shows "Events" and "Duration".
Since file sizes are small (ranging between approximately one-half and two-thirds the size of an equivalent SMF file), device memory sizes can be kept small, the required disk capacity for relay servers is reduced, and the load on networks is lightened.
* For example, in SMF format a single note must be represented using both a Note ON message and a Note OFF message. In a SMAF file, however, a Note ON message alone is sufficient (since this encapsulates both the Note ON message and the Gate Time). Hence, data volume is halved.
