Introduction
SMAF stands for Synthetic music Mobile Application Format. The SMAF specification defines a data format designed for the efficient and compact representation of multimedia content for use on mobile devices. Data created in accordance with the SMAF specification consists of one or more data sequences encapsulated in a single file.
The data sequences are combined into a form which can be played back on the target device. All sequences are played back using the same time axis. In other words, all sequences are played back in synchronization. SMAF is a data format designed to represent content for this kind of synchronous playback.
The basic section of the SMAF specification defines a method for representing music data for use with Yamaha mobile device sound generator LSIs. In addition, SMAF is designed as a versatile and extensible format which will allow for expanded functionality in the future.
Slight variations in the SMAF specification exist due to the differences between the various Yamaha mobile device sound generator LSIs. Also, there are variations in the ways in which third-party companies apply the specification in their mobile devices. Hence, these pages are intended to present both an outline and a full explanation of SMAF's features and benefits.
