Real Grooves, Real Sounds!
Chapter 5: Playing Real Instrumental Sounds
MA-3 sound chip incorporates WaveTable generator to enable sampling live source and FM tone generator to synthesize sounds. FM tone generator can play 32- note-polyphony and WaveTable generator can play 8-note-polyphony simultaneously. Totally, MA-3 is capable of playing back 40- note-polyphony in all.

Playing Back Waveforms in Loops or Generating Envelopes
In Chapter 4, technique to use PCM waveform for music production on MA sound chip is introduced. MA-3 sound chip let you arrange WaveTable samples in scales. You can use WaveTable samples to produce rhythm parts and sound effects. You'll be very much tempted to use the WaveTable samples for melody and harmonic parts.

In addition, looped playback of PCM waveform, envelope generation and modulation are supported. MA sound chip enables you to generate longer sounds from short waveform, generate envelopes, and enhance your music with effects such as vibrato and tremolo.

MA Sound Demo051 consists entirely of strings in the form of WaveTable samples. MA Sound Demo051a consists of original waveforms with no modification. MA Sound Demo051b contains looped and enveloped waveforms. In this demo, loops and envelopes sustain tiny, fragmented waveforms, nuances to attack and resonance is added.

Combining Sound Sources with Different Characteristics to Enrich and Diversify Music
While the FM tone generator produces various sounds by editing of timbre parameters, sounds of the FM tone generator is what is synthesized. WaveTable generator employs a different system. Tones produced by WaveTable generator are distinctive and noticeable even with FM tone generator. You can highlight particular sections of your tune by using these two-tone generators with suitable combinations. You can also increase variations of sound by assigning certain tone to the two generators.

The sounds of the first half of MA Sound Demo052 are synthesized entirely by the FM tone generator. The melody and melodic backgrounds are replaced by WaveTable samples in the second half.

MA Sound Demo053 uses "Bell Sounds" which FM generator is more suitable for, and "Live Choir Sounds, which only WaveTable samples can reproduce. This combination of the two-tone generators enriches tune.

Using Wavetable Samples for Certain Rhythm Parts
MA-3 sound chip supports seven preset drum sounds made from WaveTable samples - bass drums, snare drums, closed hi-hat, open hi-hat, tom-toms, crush cymbal, and ride cymbal. All of these sounds were sampled from a live session. Sound is extremely real.

In its first half of MA Sound Demo054 contains drumbeats synthesized entirely by the FM tone generator. In the sound half, major drums are replaced by preset PCM waveforms. The drum sounds produced by the FM tone generator sound clearer. This is a true advantage of FM. However, PCM waveforms offer another attraction - heavy, lifelike, palpable drumbeats

Diversifying Sounds by Combining Edited Waveforms with Sounds Produced by the FM Tone Generator
Drumbeats can be edited as PCM waveforms. MA-3 sound chips offer four editing options - pitch, volume, pan, and envelope. Using this function, you can slide the pitch of the preset tom-tom sound, produce three different pitch variations, and pan them to the left or right channels.

In Chapter 4, a technique for replacing synthesized drums with PCM was introduced. Drumbeats can also be tailored to melodies by editing preset waveforms. MA Sound Demo055 contains only preset drums in its first half. The edited waveforms are incorporated in the second half. The overall impression of a tune changes when drum tracks are modified. Editing waveforms is recommended to adjust the texture of your music.

In order to use WaveTable samples, you need to make adjustments such as, preparing waveforms, adjusting their sizes, and setting loops. However, WaveTable sample very much increase the quality of your music when used with sounds of FM tone generator.
Sample Files
-MA Sound Demos that utilize WaveTable samples.
All of Sound Demo tunes introduced below are produced by MA-3 sound chip. Listen to the differences between the FM samples and the WaveTable samples. Experience how real the sound is.

MA Sound Demo051a
This tune incorporates WaveTable samples of string sounds. This tune illustrates how established parameters can transform non-musical waveforms into instrumental sounds recognizable as music.(MA Sound Demo051a consists of original waveforms with no modification.)
MA Sound Demo051b
This tune incorporates WaveTable samples of string sounds. This tune illustrates how established parameters can transform non-musical waveforms into instrumental sounds recognizable as music.(MA Sound Demo051b contains looped and enveloped waveforms.)
MA Sound Demo052
Listen to the strings caring the melody and the brass supplying the melodic background. Sounds synthesized by the FM tone generator were used in the first half, and are replaced by WaveTable samples from live performances. Listen to the differences between real strings and brass and the synthesized ones in this tune.
MA Sound Demo053
The FM tone generator is not very suitable for producing choir sounds. In this tune, a WaveTable sample is used to reproduce choir sounds, and they were matched with the bell sounds of FM tone generator.
MA Sound Demo054
Drum sounds produced by the FM tone generator are used in the first half of this tune. They are replaced with WaveTable samples in the second half. Drum of WaveTable is more distinctive from the other instruments than that of FM.
MA Sound Demo055
Wavetable samples are used for the drums throughout this tune. The pitch shifts is adding a cheerful lilt to fit the melody.
