Enhanced sounds with ADPCM
Chapter 4: Adding PCM Waveforms
MA-2 and MA-3 sound chips are designed to play sampled tones known as PCM waveforms as well as FM tones. Using PCM samples as accents brightens ring tones so much.

Creating a Rhythm Part with Original PCM Waveforms
FM tone generator synthesizes all sounds in case of MA-2, but sampled PCM waveforms are also supported in addition to FM tone generator in case of MA-3 sound chip.

Percussion sounds created by the FM tone generator are generally very suitable for enhancing clarity and audibility, however, PCM waveforms that are sampled from real percussion is good at reproducing real sound.

For instance, percussion sounds, often used other than drum sets, in PCM waveforms brings very real rhythm parts. Snare and kick drum by PCM waveforms will also bring nicer sounds that would fit to a particular music style.

MA Sound Demo041 is a rhythm sound sample where the first half is created by preset sounds and the last half is original PCM waveforms.

Using Sounds of Everyday Life, and Human Voices as Effects
FM tone generator is able to synthesize a wide variety of percussion sounds and sound effects. With PCM waveforms it allow to sample any sounds such as those created by an analog synthesizer. Percussion sounds and sound effects processed from industrial noise are examples.

Animal calls, car horns, and banging doors can be nice sound effects. Rapping and other human voices, vinyl scratches, and other sounds can be also sampled and used for specific music genres.

MA Sound Demo042 uses sampled explosion sounds and dog barks. MA Sound Demo043 uses a sampled human voice.

Incorporating Break Beats Using Rhythm Loops
One-shot sampled sounds are introduced above. But, phrases of certain lengths can be also played back with waveforms when waveform memory is fully utilized. Rhythm loop is an example. It is a key to sample waveforms by dividing some blocks rather than sampling the entire loop. Changing the order and timing makes it possible to have a variety from one rhythm loop. In short, you can create your music with breakbeats.

MA Sound Demo044 mixes a rhythm loop with a regular drum sounds.

Playing Entirely Phrases using PCM Streaming
Limited memory capacity of the MA-3 sound chip for PCM waveforms doesn't allow to play long PCM waveforms. MA-3 sound chips supports PCM streaming and it allows to play longer PCM waveforms, which are retrieved from the memory of mobile phone in real time. This function enhances music with longer sampled phrases. In the third bar of MA Sound Demo045, guitar, brass, and drum loop are all played back in PCM stream, producing a vivid sound.

All of Sound Demo tunes introduced below are produced by MA-3 sound chips. PCM waveforms are used aggressively, while FM tone is also used.
Sample Files
-MA Sound Demos that utilize vibrato, and echo techniques
All Demo songs introduced below are played back by MA-3. The FM tone generator produced all sounds contained in these samples except the sounds of drums.
All downloads are in .zip format.

MA Sound Demo041
Synthesized bass drums, snare drums, handclaps, tambourine chops, and conga beats replaced to PCM waveforms of original sounds at the last half of the song. Listen to the difference in rhythm section.
MA Sound Demo042
In this tune, following a loud blast, a dog starts singing.
The blast is processed from a noise. The dog barks are played back in various pitches.
MA Sound Demo043
A sampled human voice sounds like a DJ is used in this demo.
Feel the fun of non-instrumental sounds.
MA Sound Demo044
Sliced beats taken from a two-bar rhythm loop are sequenced in various order and timings to create the intricate rhythms. Such rhythms can't be created by programmed drumbeats alone.
MA Sound Demo045
A sampled two-bar phrase is played back in PCM stream to enhance sounds. PCM Stream will be played in stereo. Certain drum parts, bass, strings, and shouts are the only sequenced parts.
